The 1000-Hour Cosmetology & 1000-Hour Barbering Programs
The rumors are true. California’s education hour requirement for Cosmetology licensing has been reduced from 1600 hours to 1000 hours and Barbering licensing from 1500 hours to 1000 hours. The new rule was created by California Senate Bill (SB) 803, which was signed by the Governor on October 7, 2021 and went into effect on January 1, 2022.
Once the bill was signed into law, schools were able to apply for approval for the new 1000-hour courses through the California Board of Barbering and Cosmetology and any accrediting agencies. Coba Academy is excited to announce that as of March 22, 2022, we have been approved for the new 1000-hour courses through the California Board of Barbering and Cosmetology as well as our accrediting agency, the National Accrediting Commission of Career Arts & Sciences (NACCAS). Coba Academy is now offering the new 1000-hour cosmetology and barbering courses!
With the newly reduced hour programs, you can finish your education requirements for Cosmetology or Barbering licensing in as little as 8 months! 8 months for 35 hours per week, Monday through Friday, 9:00am – 4:30pm. In addition to the reduced hours in Cosmetology and Barbering programs, SB 803 also brought other perks, including:
- Removing the practical state board examination (Yup! That’s right! No more state board practical exam, written exam only!)
- Expanding the esthetic scope of practice to include eyebrow lamination, lash lifting, and eyebrow and lash tinting. See our blog post on that here.
