Eyebrow Trends Lamination, Tinting, and Microblading What’s the Difference?

The full, fluffy, supermodel-esq eyebrow trend was strong last year and is not going anywhere soon. Most of us can probably agree on the importance of good eyebrows, especially after having to wear masks for the past couple years and eyebrows being one of the only visible parts of the face! 90s fashion may be back, but the over plucked, thin brows of the 90s are totally out. Today’s trends are all about having a full, feathery, strong, natural looking brows – think Brooke Shields.

If you weren’t born with killer brows, do not fear, there are plenty of modern beauty techniques to help you achieve the look, no matter what type of brows you have. Today we’ll talk about the top three trendiest brow services: lamination, microblading, and tinting. Remember, always be sure to visit a licensed esthetician. These services require chemicals that need to be handled by a licensed professional.

Lamination

Eyebrow lamination is a perm for your brows. Do your eyebrow hairs curl? Do they not lay flat? Eyebrow lamination chemically straightens each individual hair, allowing your eyebrows to be reshaped into a fuller thicker shape by having each hair stretched out, lying flat to its full length. The service creates the “fluffy” or “feathery” look, by redirecting hairs to an upright position, giving your eyes a lift. Eyebrow lamination lasts for about 4 – 6 weeks. As of January 1, 2022, lash perms and brow lamination are now included in the California Esthetician’s license scope of practice. To perform this service in California, you must be a licensed esthetician.

Microblading

Microblading is a modern technique of permanent makeup, where tiny “hairs” are individually tattooed on to the skin underneath your natural brows. Are your eyebrows sparse? Do you spend hours per day filling them in with eyebrow pencil? Microblading is a permanent solution to help you achieve the look of fuller, thicker brows, without having to draw them on every day. Microblading lasts 2 – 2.5 years. To perform this service in California, you must be a licensed Body Art Practitioner in the county you would like to work in. Having a California Esthetician’s license is helpful to learn the creative side of brow shaping and sometimes required as a prerequisite to microblading courses, while the Body Art Practitioner license is legally required.

Tinting

Brow tinting is the practice of dying your eyebrows (or lashes – lash tinting). Are you fair? Are your eyebrows and eyelashes blonde and you wish they were a little darker? If you wanted to darken your brow or lash hair color for any reason, tinting is for you. Tinting lasts 4 – 6 weeks. Brow and lash tinting are coming back to California! Once banned due to the lack of FDA approved dyes, as of January 1, 2022, brow and lash tinting services can be performed by licensed estheticians in California. However, there are still no FDA approved tinting products, so stay tuned.

Brow lamination, microblading, and tinting are three beauty techniques to help you achieve the full brows of your dreams. Choose one technique or use all three! It all depends on your goals and the look you want to achieve. Interested in getting certified to perform these services?
